I miss blogging. Beginning with some yard sale presents I bought my family, I'm going to start posting my latest finds after Christmas. Then, in 2012, I'm going to get serious about being more organized so I can more often. I'd like to create a blog roll of other sites that discuss yard sale, flea market, and thrift shop scores. Yard Sales Are Underway

So, yard sale season is officially underway. There were 50 or so yard sales within a 10 mile radius of my home the last couple of weekends. However, life committments made it impossible for me to go to many. Yesterday, I opted to cut ten inches off my hair for Locks of Love. I did go to four yard sales before my hair appointment. I found a Relic $1, and two large slotted serving spoons for 50 cents.
I apologize that I don't have pics of these finds. I put them away rather quickly.

So, this coming Saturday, I won't be able to yard sale. I'm attending the wedding of a close friend out of town. Perhaps I will find a few on Sunday afternoon.

My First Sales of the Year

So, it was a little on the chilly side, but I ventured out to my first yard sales this weekend. Only a handful of sales were advertised in my area and I only ran into two unadvertised sales. I picked up three beautiful damask tablecloths ($1 each), a sterling silver ladle ($1), a full size cooler ($7), a mini cooler ($3), NIP pantyhose ($1), a really awesome server set for ($3), and a bread maker (FREE!). I also scored an AMAZING yard sale present for my brother, but I think he reads my blog from time to time so I can't post about it here. I will edit this post to include photos of my great finds later.

Gee Whiz!

Where have I been? Well, in my part of the world (the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia) I am in what I refer to as a Yard Sale Drought. You see, it's extremely cold and WINDY here and nobody will be having any sales until late March. I am dying for yard sale season to begin. Usually, I post Goodwill or other thrift shop finds during the drought, but I haven't gone thrifting in a long time. I'm spending the day with my Fairy Godmother (my friend Cindy) today, and maybe we'll head over to Second Thyme around to see what they have.
To my followers ... I promise that once yard sale season begins, I will be posting regularly. My list of "to finds" has already started and includes:

* Picture frames of various and rather odd sizes

* plastic tubs for my school supply closet

* rubber stamps that feature floral designs

* galoshes

* driving gloves

* Zumba pants

* any Beverly Lewis or Francine Rivers novels I haven't read

* Several Board Games: Encore, True Colors, Would You Rather, Scattergories, Scrabble

* A Propane Coleman Lantern

What to Wear When Yard Sale-ing

One does not need to look trendy, pretty, or glamorous to yard sale. A die hard, serious yard saler can be quickly spotted for their practicality and comfortable attire.

What to wear:

1. Layers:
I reccommend a long sleeved, button front shirt over a T-shirt. Your T-shirt needs to be long enough that when you bend over to sift through a box of goodies you don't give the world a show. ;)

2. Comfortable Sneakers:
I don't reccomend sandals. If you are up and about early, chances are you will be walking in dew covered grass. In addition, I've had several occasions where I found myself walking in tall grass and/or muddy areas.

3. Sunglasses

4. A small purse with a very long strap that can be draped across your body, leaving your hands free for digging.

I purchased some things that I normally wouldn't on this sale-ing trip. I am honored to be a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an organization of key women educators. As a service project, we are making Christmas wreaths for a local nursing home. That is why I purchased the wreath, ornaments, and ribbon ($2.00 total!).

My favorite find of the day were the handmade purses. They still had the $35 dollar price tags from a craft show, but I only paid $5. Woo hooo!!!

The other purse is a yard sale gift for my MIL. I picked up the little gourd ornament because it seems that I always need an ornament for an exchange at Christmas time (25 cents). The brand new tupperware container is PERFECT for microwaving at work (50 cents). I've always wanted a set of those little vintage grape-shaped on the vine salt n pepper shakers (25 cents!!!). The Partylite candle holder is super heavy and shouldn't blow off my porch (50 cents). I couldn't resist the Santa figurine. At Christmas time, I deck out my kitchen in St.Nick. The pyrex dish was $1, the oatmeal bath (opened but none of it used) was 25 cents and is wonderful when you have dry skin or poison ivy. The T-Shirt was 25 cents.

Yard Sale Buddies - A Rare and Precious Breed, Indeed!

People often say, "I want to go yard saling with you." They go one time, and they never seem to ask again. This used to hurt my feelings until I realized why this was happening. I'm a DIE HARD yard saler. I don't mess around. I get up EARLY. I'm on a mission ... Yes, I have fun, but I don't want to stop at Starbucks or chat with your long lost buddy from high school for twenty minutes.

I have a very, very good friend that is my best yard saling buddy. Her name is Cheryl (pictured at the right, above) and we've been yard saling together more than twenty times over the past year. She and I hold the same basic saling philosophies.

So, what makes a good yard sale buddy?

1. They get up early like you do. -- And they don't whine about it!

2. They take turns driving and/or split gas money with you.

3. Like you, they understand the importance of time management. Find it, browse it, buy it, and get on with it.

4. They know how to make big huge things fit into tiny little cars. Cheryl and I once managed to get two sets of bifold closet doors into her little car after a long day of saling and a bunch of merchandise already in there. On another occasion, we brought home a buffet in my Taurus! Oh yeah, Baby!

5. They don't want to the buy the same kind of goodies you want to buy. If you both want the same things, things will be weird. Cheryl and I look for totally different things, and we have fun finding things for each other.

6. They know when to call it a day.

A Hot Mish Mash

Love the vintage umbrella. It's huge and in perfect condition. 50 cents
Brand new magnetic mailbox cover. New, these sell for about 14.95 in my area. I paid $1.00. :)

Beautiful earrings. The woman having the sale told me that her mother-in-law bought them for her in Barbados and since she hates her mother-in-law she can't wear them. $1.00. The necklace was 50 cents. I think it's Premier.

All of the adhesive rhinestones and pearls were 25 cents per package. I will put them in the HappyScrapper bags next month. The wall paper rolls are EXACTLY what I want for one of my bathrooms. That stuff is expensive at Lowes and I got it for $1 per roll.

Once again, Blogger turns a photo sideways for no apparent reason. Agh. Anyhoo - This was a treasure find. She's a vintage My Child Doll in original clothing. Unfortunately, some little girl decided to take a green magic marker to her forehead and arms. I bought her for resale.

I don't usually whine about the heat. I get tired of hearing other people whine about the heat. But, DANG ... this summer has been hot!!!! I understand all the complaining, I really do. The summer heat has certainly had a huge effect on my yard sale efforts this summer. I haven't posted much here because I really haven't been to as many sales. Usually, I go to yard sales every weekend in the summer. In total, I've went yard saling maybe five times the whole summer. It's just too hot. So, I went out for just about an hour (before the heat really revved up) a couple of weeks ago, and these were my finds.

It's been a busy few weeks, but I WILL be yard saling this weekend - both Friday and Saturday, so keep your eyes peeled for some new loot posts by the end of the weekend and pray for NO THUNDERSTORMS!!!

Beatin' the Heat

Last weekend was blazin' hot, but have no fear! The Garage Sale Diva isn't dissuaded by a little sunshine. :) Nope .... I headed out to several yard sales on Friday and Saturday and came home extremely satisfied. The best sale I went to was this unadvertised one that had a brand new Mr.Clean mop for $1. If you happen upon an unadvertised sale ... STOP! It's probably a lot less picked over by the other garage sale divas and divos.

I bought these two Care Bears (vintage and including a cousin; gifts for my sister) for 50 cents, the patriotic Santa for 50 cents, and bunch of books for my classroom for 10 cents each.

My heart was racing out of my chest when I found this gem! This is a brand new, still in the package, $60 paper trimmer ... it comes with a dock for your mp3 player. The asking price was $10 and I talked the seller down to $5. HISTORIC.

I paid around$3.50 for everything in this photo; 2 garden flags, an angel figurine, a remote holder that I plan to use as a pencil caddy on my desk, a string of country hearts, a beautful tablecloth for my dining table, a mini Crock Pot for my mom, and a snowman dish/utensil.

I spent about $5.50 on everything in this photo; 2 purses, a brand new pair of Danskin shoes, brand new slipper socks, new stickers, new teacher bag, a vintage clothing steamer (they work better than the newer ones), and a little notebook I plan to embellish and give to a friend.

All twelve books for $1.20. All are published by Scholastic, and that means I have a Reading Counts quiz for them in my classroom. YES! Btw, never pay more than 25 cents for a softbound book in mint condition. If it's a little worn, ask the seller if they'll take ten cents.

The two hats were a splurge at the flea market ... $3 each, but I loooove them so much. The little garden decorations were 10 cents each, and all of the stamps and blender pends were $1.00 total. The blender pens alone retail for $9.95 plus shipping and handling.

What To Bring

All avid (and rabid!) yard salers know that there are some items to pack that will make their yard sale adventures more fun and easier. This is The Garage Sale Diva's Yard Saler Packing List:

1. Full tank of gas.
Nothing is worse than being in between two awesome sales and having to divert your route to go to the gas station.
2. A list, printout, or other way of knowing your route. I usually just jot down a few addresses on the back of an envelope after scouring Craigslist, The Buyer's Guide, and the local newspaper. For the most part, I can remember my route in my head, and I only write down the sales that I'm afraid I may forget. On particulary busy Saturdays, I'll use Yahoo maps and actually map out my route.

3. LOTS of change and $1 and $5 bills. This is a biggie. Many people that are having yard sales grossly understimate the change that they will need.

4. Sunglasses. I actually use these not only to protect my eyes, but I also don't like for others to know exactly what I'm looking at. Weird, I know.

5. Water and a snack.

6. Hand Sanitizer. After handling items, it's nice to have. I've been to a few sales that have made me want to bathe in it.

7. Boxes, bags, and bubble wrap. Make sure your treasures make it home safely.

8. A likeminded friend :) Going to yard sales with a friend is incredibly FUN if you are the same type of yard salers. My friend Cheryl is a great yard sale friend. In a future blog post, I'll write about what makes a great Yard Sale Buddy. I'll also be writing about WHAT TO WEAR when yard saling.

Oh, The Places You'll Go

I went yard saling a couple of weekends ago with my favorite yard sale buddy, Cheryl. What makes a good yard sale buddy? Hmmm... well, let's save that for another blog post. ;)

So, we went to a few sales that were incredibly small. I always wonder at these incredibly small sales how much $$$ the individual would make even if they sold every single item. It doesn't seem worth it to me, but hey, whatever floats their boat.

Berkely County Relay for Life had a huge sale in the Martinsburg Mall Parking lot. Everything was "donation only." This presents a challenge for people like me. I want to give a donation, but I don't want it to be insultingly low. At the same time, I do want to score a deal on the items that I'm purchasing. At the Relay for Life Sale, I bought a quilted purse, some Kelly doll furniture, an electric light (that didn't work when I got home- agh!), a HUGE box of pencils, and a couple of Strawberry Shortcake things. The Kelly doll furniture is for prop use. I am entering the photo contest this year at the Strawberry Shortcake Collector's Convention. The furniture is the perfect size. I was most excited about that huge box of pencils. As a teacher, I probably purchase between 500 - 1000 pencils a year, with my own money.

At the Spring Mills Flea Market, I was pretty disappointed to find that most of the vendors still had their stuff covered up or were only beginning to unload at 9:00 a.m.. I'm not real impressed with this new flea market yet, but that is fodder for yet another future blog post. The only items I found there were some vintage My Little Ponies, a gold purse, and a beat up vintage CPK. He needs some major work, but I think he'll be cute once I get him fixed up.

We went to the Bartles' family yard sale. This sale was huge. They had tarps laying everywhere and EVERYTHING was 25cents. I wish I had been able to go to this sale on Friday because I think I could have scored bigtime. I did get a complete Lemon SSC doll, a LPS, and a pretty blue tin.

Also on Rt.11, at a townhouse, I found a lavendar sweater and three cans of Avon Bug Spray. That stuff works wonders! My husband is an avid hunter and it's all he'll use. We usually pay at least $6 a can from an Avon dealer, so at $1 a can, I bought all she had with a smile on my face.

Near downtown Martinsburg, we stopped at a house with an unadvertised sale. They had a TON of great baby stuff, but alas I wasn't in the mood to look for stuff for the Care Pregnancy Center that day. Instead, I found some great books for my classroom, including a copy of The Places You'll Go. I plan to read it to my exiting 8th graders on the last day of school.

Anyhoo - I didn't come home with much, but that was due to the weather. We only had a couple of hours because the wind was incredbile and the sky was black due to an impending thunderstorm. That's okay ... we have all summer left. Besides, we had a wonderfully relaxing lunch at Habanero in downtown Martinsburg. Yummy.

In my opinion, the 2010 Yard Sale Season for my area has officially started. Wooo hoooo!! I have big yard sale plans for the morning, so wish me luck. I went last week, to only about five sales, and found some awesome stuff. I hope to post pictures from last week and tomorrow on my blog tomorrow night, so stay tuned.

Winter: The Season of Drought

It is about this time of year that I begin to have SERIOUS yard sale withdrawal symptoms. There aren't any yard sales in my area from about November to late March, due to cold and snow. Are you suffering from Yard Sale Withdrawal? Signs of YSW:

1. You find yourself making numerous handwritten and mental lists of items you want to find at yard sales.

2. You daydream about that first warm Saturday, planning what time you'll leave and who you are going to take with you.

3. You find yourself in the thrift store . . . wishing that you were paying yardsale prices.

4. You dream at night of finding that awesome treasure for 25 cents!

5. You are on Ebay every day. Bidding. Lots.

Pictured above are some recent Goodwill finds. I've been buying a lot of small toy items because I have a new hobby of making custom Strawberry Shortcake dolls. The bag of Bristle Blocks toys is an incredible find! My siblings and I used to play with those for hours. They are EXTREMELY hard to find. The Betsey Clark Mug is a gift for a friend, as is the CPK rattle. The other stuff is for custom doll making. I know, it's not a very exciting lot of goodies. However, I don't like Goodwill Prices. I'm suffering with a bad case of YSW.

Lots of Thrifting Fun

Here are some pictures of my weekend finds from a local flea market and thrift store. I have more time for thrifting these days, so there should be more regular posts her on my blog. I've set a goal to attract twenty followers by January 1, 2009. Wish me luck! :)

Anyhoo - About the finds:

#1 Toys: I found two vintage Strawberry Shortcake items; a rag doll and a Crepe mini. I also found some older Little People, a pair of CPK shoes, a Baby Bratz, and some My Little Ponies. I bought all of those items for resale. The little animals, the Strawberry Shortcake purse, and the dress from the Kelly doll are mine to keep. I can use the little animals and dress for custom dollmaking. The SSC purse is so cute that I plan to use it at the convention next year.

#2 Books: I love cookbooks, especially older ones from the 70's. They include "real" ingredients.

The chapter books are for my classroom and the Bill Clinton books are for my dad. Don't ask. He's crazy.

#3 The scrapbooking goodies: All I can say is Wahhh Hoooooooooo!!!!!!! This lady at the flea market not only gave me wonderful prices but she gave me her phone number. She has "more than 8" rubbermaid totes full of never out of the package, never used scrapbooking goodies. She's a retired consultant for a stamp company and has over 100 sets to sell. I can't wait to dig through all of those goodies.

I've decided to completely overhaul my blog. This blog, The Garage Sale Diva, is going to remain a blog about my garage sale, flea market, thrift store, and bargain hunting adventures.

However, I'm going to be starting a seperate blog for my papercrafting projects. The new blog should be up and running soon. I'm very honored that my new blog will be part of a new blogging group called Busy Bee Bloggers.

I hope to update both blogs on a more regular basis then I've been posting here lately.

Yard Sale Hauls - July 16/17

I paid less than $5 for everything in this picture.

My favorite author is Beverly Lewis. I picked these up for 10 cents. They retail for $14.99 each!

I scored a ton of LPS figures at a great price! :)

I was delighted by the perfect weather, plethora of sales, and great pricing this weekend. Amongst my many finds were a Willow Tree Angel for 10 cents, a brand new Rosetti wallet for 50 cents, a brand new magnetic mailbox cover for 10 cents, and an awesome Pier 1 import candle holder for my front porch (with a gorgeous marble base) for $1.50. I bought even more than is pictured here! I also got a bag of My Little Ponies and other little animals, six badmitton rackets, a bag of badmitton birdies, and a double stroller (I'll donate it to the Care Pregnancy Center).

*The Yard Sale of the Weekend was definitely on Lincoln Avenue in Martinsburg. The Worst Yard Sale of Weekend was definitely the one where my mother-in-law and I both had some things in our hands that we were going to purchase, but we put them down and walked away after the seller was rude to several elderly shoppers. I can't remember the address, but it was in the subdivision closest to the Weight Watchers office off of Rock Cliff Drive. There's no need to be rude - yard sales should be fun!

Berry Sweet Project

I'm working on my Strawberry Shortcake Convention Scrapbook. The 2009 Convention is only 26 days away, and I haven't finished my 2008 album yet. ;) When I look at these photos, I can really tell that I've lost 41 pounds and it encourages me to keep going on my journey to my ultimate weight loss goal.

Today's HappyScrapper Meeting was awesome! I think it was one of the best we've had. I didn't get a whole lot of scrappin' or card makin' done, but it didn't matter. Scrap, Tac, Toe

Ho Hum Yard Sales

This past Friday, I went to yard sales. As the title of this post implies, the sales were just Ho Hum. One of these days, I'm going to get around to posting my list of Yard Sale Dos and Yard Sales Don'ts. For example, don't say, "Something for everyone" in your yard sale ad if every single item at your yard sale is infant clothing. LOL

Anyhoo - Here were my finds from Friday:

1. A Phonics book (for a homeschooling friend) - 10 cents

2. Some SSC books and other books for my classroom - 25 cents each

3. Three glass candleholders and a large mason jar (I am going to be using these to decorate for a party)

4. An ice scraper (I accidentally ran over mine last winter - don't ask!)

5. Two rag rugs, perfect for the backseat of my car - 50 cents each

6. Two unopened packs of favor boxes - 50 cents each

Season of Friendship

I had two general inspirations for this card. First, I was inspired by the wonderful 2RedBananas Banana Split Sunday Challenge. The challenge was to create a card inspired by a summertime photograph. I found inspiration in the summer season, the azure blue color, and the simplicity of the photo.

Secondly, I was inspired by the gratitude that I feel for the wonderful friends that I have in my life. So many friends... real, true friends stopped me in church this morning to ask me how Grandma Thelma was doing this morning. Another friend brought me a bag of clothes because she knows I've been working so hard at my weight loss goals and that buying new clothing before you reach your goal is expensive. Another friend sent me an ecouraging card about my weight loss yesterday. I'm so blessed to have so many great friends and I truly believe the sentiment on this card.... "The Season of Friendship Lasts Forever."

It was difficult to photograph this card - especially the glittery little blue bird in the tree.

A Congratulations Moose

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - I love the Stampin' Up Set, "Moose You." I have used it for so many cards and for so many occasions. This is a "congratulations" card for my cousin who recently graduated. He likes the outdoors, so I thought it was fitting. This is one of the cards I made when I visited my sweet friend (and Soul Sistah), Veronica. She let me use her Top Note Die and I fell in love with it. It is something that I am going to put on my stampin' wish list. The ribbon was a $1.00 find at the Crafts 2000 store in Parkersburg, WV.

I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful summer sunshine. I'm reminded of God's glorious blessings each time I'm outside and see a new bloom, a rainbow, or beautifully clear night sky.

I've renewed my committment to making HappyScrappers the best that it can be. I know that I've recently been a bit disorganzined, and I promise that is changing. I have many fun things planned for our next Happy Scrapper meeting and future meetings. It's going to be SO MUCH FUN!!!! Please keep reading for details...

Our Next Meeting:

When: Saturday, July 11th, 10:00 a.m. (As always, the schedule is flexible. You may come late and/or leave early)
Theme: GARDEN PARTY
What to Bring: Your Supplies, Something to Share for Lunch, a small door prize, and a smile. :)

I plan to make ham salad and chicken salad sandwiches.

You may want to wear a garden hat. ;)

Project Demonstrations:

A Pencil Bouquet (the perfect gift for a teacher, receptionist, secretary, etc.)
AND
A Ribbon Blossom (great on scrapbooking pages, card fronts, or even the top of gifts)

Games/Other Fun:
We'll play a garden trivia game, Scrappin' Tic Tac Toe, and have one card/page challenge.

Everyone in attendance will receive a page of printed garden themed quotations/verses for use in cards or scrapbooking pages, a print out of the ribbon blossom directions, a set of four card sketches, and a Goody Flower Pot.

If you would like to demo a project, add something to the Goody Flower Pots, and/or host a game, please let me know. Also, if you know what you are going to bring along for lunch, let me know. On June 6th, I couldn't wait to go yard saleing. There were several community yard sales advertised and I had high hopes. It wasn't a terrible day, but it certainly wasn't the best either. Some of the "community" sales were really just two homes. Bummer. On the bright side, I'll give the Willow Ridge Subdivision five stars ***** for their awesome community yard sale. Most of this great stuff came from there.

Do Not Be Afraid....

This is a card for someone who recently suffered a house fire. I've been there, and done that, so I know that there really aren't the "right words" to say, but it's very comforting when people take the time to extend their thoughts of concern. Since the card is for a man, I tried to use masculine colors and patterned paper. Hence, I thought the hemp twine was more fitting than ribbon. The sketch was inspired by the Challenge # 119 over at Card Positioning Systems. I really like long cards because you have so much more room to work with verses a standard sized card. Garage Sale Hauls 3/30

My friend Cheryl and I hit the yard sales at about 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, May 30th, and we hit the jackpot! Her car was so full of finds that we had to put her back seats down and I had to push my passenger seat up until I only had about six inches for my knees. What a great day. First, the weather was PERFECT. Slight breeze, mid 70's. We found several sales withing just an 8 mile radius of my house, and most importantly ..... the yard sales were PRICED RIGHT! An Altered Coaster

I made this little wall hanging by altering a cheap corkboard coaster. I find these kinds of coasters all of the time, usually in packs of 4 or 8, at yards sales for 10 cents or 25 cents a pack. First, I covered the entire front of the coaster with patterened paper. Then I trimmed and adhered the photo. I added the prima flower embellishments, using some tiny button brads as flower centers. (Thanks, OJ, for those tiny button brads - I love them!) Last, I adhered a ribbon to the back so I could hang it. It's an especially sentimental photo because it's the last one I have of Brian and myself with my Grandma.

Double TollGate Flea Market 4/5

I met my wonderful friend Veronica and her family at the Double TollGate Flea Market on Sunday. I had a great time walking and talking with them. I also found some GREAT stuff. I bought a new Home & Garden Party Chip and Dip (a gift for my MIL), a vintage Sweet Scents Doll (I want the purple tights for a custom doll), crib sheets and blankets (to donate to the CPC where I volunteer), a vintage Willow figurine, and self adhesive crystals for cardmaking.

I noticed that there were several new vendors this time around and prices seemed to be extremely reasonable. If you are in the area, it's a great way to spend a weekend afternoon. GRADE: A

James Rumsey Yard Sale

The Loot: SSC game (I'll use the pieces to make cards), Two brand new Tupperware Salad Containers (very handy for work), SSC lights, SSC talking doll, Vintage SSC and Lime Tin, Care Bear pillow (for my sister), Several T-Shirts (appear to be brand new for 50 cents each), plastic baskets (one escaped the photo - needed for my classroom!)

The James Rumsey Yard Sale in an unpredicatable creature. Two years ago, I filled my car with so much wonderful stuff from this sale that I literally had to drive home with my knees in the dashboard, as I had to move my seat up to fit everything in. Last year, I left almost completely empty handed.

This year, the sale was hampered by extremely cold and windy weather. Some of the sellers seemed to be of the flea market variety - high priced junk in some cases. However, I did find some good stuff, too - including some Strawberry Shortcake. Overall Grade: C.

April HappyScrappers Meeting

I hope everyone is enjoying the anticipation of Spring weather, blooming flowers, and warmer days. Please read this HappyScrapper invitation, in it's entirety.

Due to Brian's work schedule and my Apples of Gold schedule, as well as a couple of other factors, we will not be meeting at our regular TIME during the month of April. We will have to start at 2:00 in the afternoon and share dinner, instead of lunch. I'd like to encourage everyone to wear thier pajamas, and plan to stay late. Have you ever made a 3-D card using copies of the same image and PopDots? If not, then you really should give it a try. Although it may be hard to tell from my substandard picture, it's actually quite easy and the effect is AWESOME. I was inspired to make this card by friends at Scrap This Way and my friend Claire at Strawberryland TownSquare. I've been dying to use this yummy rainbow Satin ribbon for a while now and this was the perfect project. Would you believe that I purchased a walmart size bag FULL of this ribbon for just $1.00? Oh, how I love a bargain. Speaking of bargains, I'll soon be posting pictures and photos from my yard sale/thrift store/flea market hauls, so be sure to keep checking here on my blog. I made this little coupon book for my hubby, and best friend, Brian. I was inspired by my friend Melanie and her Challenge #3 at Strawberryland Town Square. Simple Baby Card and Frugal Tip

I made this simple baby card for a friend at work. It's a smaller size than the usual 4 1/4 x 5 1/2. Why? Well.... it my plight to be every so frugal, I started buying dirt cheap cards at yard sales. I give the cards to some little girls at church to play with and I keep the envelopes. Then, I use my scrap cardstock pieces that are leftover from scrapbooking to make cards that fit the envelopes.

Reflecting on this simple verse, I made this simple card and coordinating gift tag. God is still a God of great miracles. The God that I pray to and worship today is the same God that parted The Red Sea. That's such an amazing reminder of God's sovereignty and power.

Good day, everyone!

The verse that inspired this card:
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." Matthew 5:8

I've been thinking a lot lately about purity - purity of heart, I mean. I've been more aware of my need to guard my heart from all kinds of evil..... the importance of filling my heart with that which is good and true and righteous. I may write more about this later.

The stamp I used for this card came from one of my very first Stampin Up purchases - Say Something Mice. It's a darling set with cutesy detailed images and simple, heartfelt images. I hadn't used this set for three years and couldn't wait to play with it again.

The card is also my submission for the Stamp Something Challenge Blog this week. The challenge is to make a "Birthday Something." The winner will recieve a great suprise from StarvingArtist Stamps. Woo Hoo!

Brrrr.... It's Cold Outside!

I was inspired by this Bible Verse: "It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;you made both summer and winter." ~ Psalm 74:17.

I've heard so many people moaning and groaning about the cold lately, however, I rejoice in the changing seasons as they are only evidence of God's constant plan for all of His creation.

This card is also my submission to the January Inspiration Challenge that I'm hosting in the Crafters Corner section of Strawberryland Town Square. I was inspired by the blues, white, and of course THE SNOW in the inspirational picture. The awesome ribbon was a gift from my good friend Veronica.

I'm off tomorrow for MLK Day, so I hope to stay inside in my cozy jammies and drink hot chocolate. Stay warm everyone, and have a blessed day!

First Layout of 2009

My Papercrafting Resolution for 2009

I never stick to the resolutions that I make about losing weight or keeping my car clean, but I do seem to always keep my papercrafting resolutions. This year, my resolution is to USE MY STASH. With the exception of an occasional stamp set, and my annual trip to the scrapbooking convention, I'm really going to clamp down on my spending. Is this because we don't have the money? No. Quite frankly, I don't have the space. I have hoarded so much *stuff* at this point that I can't fit anything else in my scrap closet. So, it's time to use it up. I had fun making these cards yesterday. Our electricity went out and the sky was dark, so it was hard to see what I was doing. :) Thanks for stopping by my blog and have a fantastic day!

Altered Prima Jar and Anniversary Card

Happy New Years Eve, everyone! Thank you for stopping by my blog today. This morning, I've made this pretty anniversary card. I was inspired by the sketch over at the Stamp Something Blog. If you've never checked out the Stamp Something sketches, I would highly recommend it. They are very original sketches, with a lot of room for individuality. Making the most of my scraps, I also altered an empty Prima jar. I hope to fill it with silver wrapped kisses before Valentine's Day. These projects were made completely with items made from my "stash." I've hoarded so many supplies over the past five years. I'm committed to using my stash over the next twelve months.

Altered Notebook for Gift Lists

It seems that I can't remember anything anymore unless I write it down. Finding myself surrounded by post-it notes and list pads, I've come to realize that my sanity depends on the art of good list keeping. In an effort to keep a list of gifts that I'm considering and/or already purchased for family and friends, I altered this little notebook. I found the notebook at Dollar General for just $1 and used scraps from my Christmas cards and a few embellishments to turn it into a "Gift Lists" book. It's the perfect size to keep in my purse. I love how it turned out.
On a completely unrelated note, this will be the last picture on my blog to include that ugly time/date stamp! I finally figured out how to take it off tonight.

A Sensational Scrappy Christmas

For Christmas, my wonderfully generous Hubby took me on a shopping spree at Crafts2000 in Parkersburg, WV. We walked in, and he said, "Pick out whatever you want." I was so excited! An hour later, I had picked out three Changito Monkey stamps, Patterned Paper, Gamsol, Chalk Ink, Stickles, glue dots, embossing powder, primas, glitter pens, metallic gel pens, and a bunch of other awesome stuff. Brian shot this pic of me at the store.

My mom and dad got me a MIMI Rolling Scrapbook Tote in pink and chocolate. I've been wanting this item FOREVER. So excited! You can see a picture of the tote here.

I also got a new stamp set from Clear Dollar Stamps. It is different from any other hunting themed set I've ever seen. Usually, a hunting set only features a deer, a tree, and maybe a gun toting hunter. This set is perfect for making cards for the men in my life because it has a bow and arrow, tree stand, hunting blind, and really cute sentiments. You can see the set here.

Of course, Christmas isn't about gifts. It's about spending time with family and friends and being thankful for all that we have. Brian and I had a very blessed Christmas and hope that all of you did, too!

Not a Creature Was Stirring, Not Even a Moose!

Finally, a card! I was inspired by the sketch over at Friday's Sketchers (you can find the link on the right). I used a Boyd's Bear Stamp Set that I bought, MIB, at a yard sale this summer. The sentiment on the inside of the card says, "Not a creature was stirring, not even a moose." The papers and ribbon are Big Lots finds.
I know this post is short, but I need to start dinner. We are having breakfast for dinner, tonight. Hashbrowns, Sausage, and Eggs. YUM!

HappyScrappers January Invitation

Hello, HappyScrappers!

Do you miss getting together and crafting together? I sure do! However, the holidays are a time filled with family events so we took a break during the months of November and December.

Happy Scrappers will be celebrating it's FOURTH anniversary in January 2009. It's hard to believe we've been scrappin' together for that long. I always look forward to our meetings and I'm blessed by the time we spend together. In honor of our HappyScrapper birthday, our theme for our next meeting will be "Birthday Bash" as that has been our theme every January. Details are included below about our January meeting. All of my trees look SO much better in real life. It's very difficult to take a decent picture with my digital camera and capture how pretty they are. I tried to take this one with the lights on.

(The picture is of me with my Uncle Lawrence. I really consider him my grandfather, more than an uncle.)

Let's see... I traveled to Parkersburg to see my family. That was a great time. I miss my family so much and it was really cool to hang out with them. My mother, sister, and myself made our annual bargain hunting pilgrimage on Black Friday. At Ollie's, I scored a TON of K&Company embellishments for $1 per pack. I also went to the Crafts2000 store. Do you live near a Crafts2000? It's a fantasticly huge crafts store with incredibly great prices. I can't post about what I purchased there because most of my purchases were Christmas gifts. ;)

..... which brings me to the next thing that's been keeping me busy. The Christmas holiday seemed to creep up on me this year. Last weekend, I found myself doing everything that I would normallys spend two to three weeks doing. I cleaned the entire house, decorated, went shopping, attended two holiday parties, wrapped gifts, put up four Christmas trees (yes, I'm nuts!), and hosted a big dinner party at my house. ALL OF THAT IN ONE WEEKEND. Whew.

..... Then there is work. For anyone who is reading and doesn't know, I'm a middle school teacher. I have been staying after school until 4 or 5 p.m. every night just to get everything finished. I'm teaching a new program this year, and although I love it, it's kickin' my booty. So, by the time I come home, change clothes, make dinner, do a load of laundry, wash the dishes, read the mail, and return my phone messages, it's time to go to bed.

This week, my church held an indoor rummage sale to benefit missions. It was a great success and I volunteered to help all three evenings (4:30-8:30 p.m.). Although I had a great time, I think I over extended myself just a bit *hee hee*

I haven't made a card or scrapbook page in over a month.

Now, I'm not whining about it. My life has just been full of other things lately. There are times when I have to put papercrafting to the side and focus on other aspects of my life wholeheartedly. My cardstock and ribbon will be waiting for me when I'm willing and able. :)

In fact, I've spent a lot of time reading The Bible, memorizing scriptures, praying, writing in my prayer journal, and generally growing in my relationship with The Lord. I've seen many prayers answered in this past month for family and friends.

Tonight, before I slumber, I hope to make two cards for friends that are going through rough times right now. Although my blog has been a total snore fest for the past few weeks, I hope that you'll check back for pictures of those cards.

May you simplify the season and remember that JESUS is the REASON for the SEASON.

Apples of Gold

I'm often asked, "What is Apples of Gold?" Apples of Gold is a mentoring Women's Bible Study. Well, I mean, that is the shortest and most 'to the point' answer I can provide. However, it's so much more to me than just a Bible study. Apples of Gold is a six week program that brings women off all ages and backgrounds together to simply fellowship and grow in God's word. The six week sessions delve deep into the following topics (no sugar coating allowed!): Loving Your Husband, Loving Your Children, Kindness, Purity, Submission, and Hospitality. More importantly, I've learned and continue to learn how to be the woman and wife that God intends me to be. I have made friends that will last a lifetime as a result of my participation in AOG. Once mentored, I am now a mentor and part of the Leadership Team. We're a tight knit group that continues to seek The Lord's Perfect Will in organizing and leading the AOG sessions. We just finished up a six week session and I'd like to share some pictures here on my blog. If you are interested in participating in our AOG group, let me know and I'll put you on the invite list for our next six week session. Gifts from my Secret Berrykin

I have the most amazing Secret Berrykin again this year. Those that have been following my blog from the beginning (all three of you - ha!) may remember that last year, Santa Dusty sent me orginal artwork by Sara Drescher of the character Nachokins and her pet, Tortilla. The character is actually based on my own image and my love for nachos. Turtles are my favorite pet, hence Tortilla.

Well, this year my Santa (who has yet to be revealed) has sent me the most fabulous gifts already. First, I got a gift card for $25 to Joann's Crafts. Woo Hoo! Today, I received these GORGEOUS handpainted glasses and nacho plate featuring, you guessed it, Nachokins and Tortilla. I'm in awe of the handpainting that Sara Drescher did. It's fantastic. I can't stop looking at them.

A Basket Full of Birthday Wishes

I made this card for my Mother-in-Law's birthday, using the Friday Sketchers blog as my inspiration. I love the way it turned out. I'm very blessed by The Lord to have a Mother in Law that is very much like a second mother to me. I'm off from work today and plan to make many cards. I need to get busy on my Christmas cards. Christmas will be here before you know it.

Brian took me back to Big Lots where I found some awesome Christmas ribbons, more ribbon (including gorgeous polka dotted purple organza), alphabet stickers, and return address labels for our Christmas cards.
Saturday morning, I had an Apples of Gold meeting. These ladies are part of our group. They are all awesome.

I made Brian an upside down pineapple cake. I make it in an iron skillet. That gives it a really great top. Brian said it was "really, really great." :)

Deals and Steals at Big Lots... Like Only a Diva Can!

I went to Big Lots this week and found some great stuff. Amongst the goodies, were two packs of three dimensional flower stickers, two packs of adorably patterned brads, K & Company Nursery Paper in soft and sweet pastel colors, and matching chipboard alphabet stickers. I also found the perfect 8x8 album to use for my Strawberry Shortcake scrapbook, but I'm going to picture it another day.

HAPPYSCRAPPERS - OCTOBER 1008

Last week, I headed to Charleston for an education conference. The fall foliage on the way there was breathtaking! The highlight of my trip was hanging out with my friend, Tracy, at the mall. We had a really nice dinner, and then we shopped around. I don't think we stopped laughing the entire time. Oh, how I wish we lived closer together. My HappyScrappers scrapbooking group also had thier October crop last week, so I posted some pictures from that as well. Enjoy the photos!

Flea Market Report

Today, Brian and I took advantage of the absolutely blessed weather and headed down to the Harpers Ferry Flea Market. I scored two tubes of Mary Kay Foundation for $2.50 each and a bottle of MK Eye Makeup Remover for $5.00. When I got home, I checked the regular retail price of these items. I saved nearly $35, plus tax and shipping. Woot! Woot! I also found some books for my classroom. I have to start Christmas shopping this month. I want to be totally finished with my Christmas shopping my December 1st and have everything wrapped by December 10th. HappyScrappers was fun yesterday. I'll be posting pics soon, so stay tuned!

I love my life here in Martinsburg. I really, really do. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Sometimes, however, I get really homesick. I miss my mom the most. I also miss some of my friends. Although I've lost touch with most of my childhood/highschool/college friends, I've remained friends with my college roommate, Tracy. I've been missing her like crazy lately, and I thought of her as I worked on this card:

Bargain Shopping and Yard Sales

Today, I went to a few yard sales, but after 30 miles, five sales, and only one purchase - I headed for my favorite bargain shopping spots. At the yard sales, I only purchased a Strawberry Shortcake First Adventures DVD. At the Goodwill, I found a three piece suit ($9)and a trendy Lane Bryant shirt ($3). Wah - hoo! At Big Lots, I purchased an awesome necklace for $5. I hit the sale racks at the Bon Ton, but came up empty handed. I did check out the really cute cropped jackets there, but forgot my 20% off coupon, so didn't buy anything. I am tired of dressing like an old, fat, school marm. I'm hoping to buy some trendier clothes this fall season. However, I don't want to break the bank getting there. I've lost between 15 and 18 pounds in the last few weeks and I wanted to reward myself with a couple new pieces of clothing. Has anyone out there ever ordered from Avenue?
I also went to the grocery store today. The weather is just way too perfect to stay inside. I stocked up on fruits, veggies, yogurt, and so on. Now I think I'm going to sweep the front porch and play in my flower beds.

Saturday's HappyScrapper Meeting was a lot of fun. It felt like the first official day of the Fall season as I scrapped all day in my jammies and sipped yummy apple cider that Bethany brought along. I didn't get a lot finished that day, but I had a great day relaxing and laughing and I really needed that kind of day. Our theme was "Pajama party" and Bethany taught us how to make very simple and adorable gift card holders. I'm going to make a ton of them for Christmas this year because I plan to give several gift cards. The best thing about these gift card holders is that they are quick, easy, and the perfect way to use up scrapbooking scraps! Carolyn passed on the Happy Scrappers Champion Cup to Ms. Joyce in honor of her delicious Corn and Doritoes salad recipe. I'm looking forward to our next meeting.

I made this card for the Stamp Something Challenge Blog. This week's challenge was to make a Fall Card. I've been making a lot of cards with pumpkins, leaves, and the typical fall stuff, so I decided to go a little different route. The men around here are all excited about the upcoming deer season, so I decided to make a deer themed card in fall colors. As I pondered who to send this card to I thought of the many "deer" friends I have in my life and how grateful I am for them.

As I worked on this card today for Kazan's Sketch #8 over at http://2sketches4you.blogspot.com/, I thought about how blessed I am and how thankful I am to The Lord for all that he has given me. I thank God for my family (especially my loving hubby), my friends, and today's pouring rain. I'm thankful that I work in such a pleasant and professional environment. I'm thankful that I live in America and have the right to vote. I'm thankful for sweet tea, pretty ribbons, and cozy, fuzzy blankets..... and a million other things, too. Fall Birthday Card

Keeping it clean and simple, I mass produced six cards like this one today. My card stash was running low on birthday themed cards. I used a small pumpkin stamp from an oldie but goodie Stampin' Up set called Tag Time. I also used a sentiment stamp from the SU Birthday Whimsy set. I'd been hoarding the ribbon for ages and was happy to use it up. I hope you like the card and thanks so much for stopping by my blog!

An Altered Box

Our camping plans were ruined this weekend because Brian had to work and I'm really sick (with the flu, maybe?). So, I've been staying inside and papercrafting this weekend. I hope all of you are getting to enjoy the weather outside instead.

First, I altered a box to hold my grocery coupons. I've shown the before and after shots.

I've also made some clean and simple cards and organized all of my vintage Strawberry Shortcake greeting cards into a scrapbook. I hope to post some more goodies later today.

An Inspired Card

I was inspired by the soft lilac scrap of cardstock used for the base of this card and Kazan's Sketch #7 at the 2 Sketches 4 You Blog. This is probably my last card before starting the new school year. It is for a dear friend that is going through a rough time right now. I don't usually use three dimensional stickers on my cards, but these were the perfect touch. As usual, it's much prettier in person, as my cards just don't seem to photograph well. Although the dew drops look clear, they are actually a light pink color.

The Double Toll Gate Flea Market

I finally have flea market news to report. Yippeeee!!! My Fairy Godmother, Cindy, invited me to go to the Double Toll Gate Flea Market with her on Saturday. It was a blast. Of course, I could have a blast watchin paint dry with Cindy. She's so fun. While we were there, my friend Veronica and her family came and we had a quick meetup with them. Her baby Cam is just the sweetest thing in the world.

Anyhoo, this is what I scored at the flea market:

- SSC Bandana

- SSC Umbrella

- Yellow Tomatoes and a lot of other great produce

It was a very fun day and I would like to go there again. My only complaint was the lack of decent bathrooms. The porta-potties are DIGUSTING. They need cleaned or dumped or something. Ewwww. Next time I'll know to pee in advance.

September HAPPYSCRAPPERS INVITATION

Summer is winding down and the school year is just around the corner. I'm not sure where my summer went. I'm sorry that we haven't met in a couple of months. I have been under the weather (with gall bladder problems) and there was a lot going on in general. Our last meeting (in May) was a huge success. We learned how to make double pocket cards and played a lot games. We also made two adorable progressive cards. A huge thank you to Shannon and Bethany for contributing to the May Goodie Bags. Carolyn was the winner of the HappyScrapper Champion Cup. Congratulations!

However, we will be meeting in September. Waaa hhoooooo!!! Here are the details. Please read to the end.

Meeting Date: September 13th, 10:00 a.m. ~ ???
Theme: Pajama Party ~ Feel free to wear your jammies and slippers
Main Dish: Pizza
What to Expect: Games, Goodie Bags, the Passing of the Happy Scrapper Champion Cup, and learning at least one new project.
What to Bring: Small door prize, something to share for lunch, supplies, and a smile.

If you would like to run a game, contribute to the Goodie Bags, or demo a technique or project, please let me know.

Although our policy of "Invitation Only" still rings true, starting with the September meeting, our group members will be divided into two lists ~ A "seated member" list and a "standby member" list. Each month, I will send an invitation to everyone on the "seated member" list. If seated members are unable to attend or don't RSVP by the specified RSVP date, then someone on the "standby" list will be invited in their place.

In doing so, I can extend an invitation to some very wonderful ladies, some of whom have been on a wait list for more than a year. Also, by doing the invites this way, I can still keep the meeting number to ten or fewer. If we have more than ten scrappers, things get too crazy!! ;)
